Forever family home

Location: Castlemaine
Architect: Wolveridge Architects
Key features: Lysaght Enseam cladding, black butt cladding, thermally broken double-glazed windows, Cemintel Barestone, Remco Coverstar, Centor retractable flyscreens, Burnished concrete slab, Mark Douglass Design lighting, Victorian Ash floorboards, American oak cabinetry, Neolith manufactured stone benchtop.

Once a classic 1960s bungalow, the property has undergone a full renovation to create a contemporary and unique home. The footprint of the original home remains, transformed into a generous master bedroom with dressing room and ensuite, a parent’s retreat and a large laundry and mudroom.

Floor to ceiling thermally broken double-glazed windows frame the main living area with its burnished concrete slab. The use of 2400mm doorways and the absence of architraves and skirting boards throughout means that nothing unnecessary distracts the eye, it also adds to the overall sense of generosity and space.

The kitchen lends itself to entertaining with sleekly integrated AEG appliances. The Neolith manufactured stone benchtop connects to a custom American oak island bench, providing ample space for large gatherings. Slide back the Centor retractable flyscreens and stacking doors and people can flow through to the outdoor entertaining area, complete with built in BBQ, fridge and bench seating.

The size of the suspended slab afforded the owners the luxury of a four-car garage under the house. Foil board insulation prevents thermal loss from the floor heating and industrial housing for ducts and wires mean no sound escapes to the house above.

Other features include refrigerated air conditioning and Clipsal Zen architectural light switches and power points.

Soaring vertical panels of black Lysaght Enseam® architectural cladding are a standout feature of the exterior. The panels intersect with custom-milled blackbutt timber cladding creating a contrast of textures and colours to meld with the bush environment. The timber cladding sits under the roofline to protect it from the weather and reduce upkeep.

Also included in the build is a freestanding concrete pool, rising up from ground level to become a striking garden feature surrounded by handcrafted, custom moulding. The Remco Coverstar fully automated pool cover can hold the weight of adult and has inbuilt thermal properties. An exposed aggregate concrete pool deck perched at pool level provides the perfect vantage point to supervise younger swimmers or just relax after a dip. Cemintel Barestone™ External prefinished panels provide a raw, contemporary finish and will weather naturally. Large slabs of local stone add texture. Custom banquette seating built into the patio wall provides another spot to watch the pool.
